On 26 September 1959, Fulham lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea and dropped to 15th place in the First Division. Fulham, captained by Jimmy Hill, had taken the lead, but were eventually beaten by a spirited Chelsea performance that included a Jimmy Greaves goal.

The previous day, Fulham had announced grand plans for their future in response to a call from the Football League that clubs should offer more comfort to the fans. Fulham's plans included spending pounds 100,000 on ground improvements, and a new stand on the Thames bank. "It will provide more seating and also cover for the fans who stand underneath," said their manager, Frank Osborne. In what turned out to be Fulham's best-ever season, they finished 10th in the First Division.
