ALEC STEWART took the man of the match award as England won their one- day warm-up game here yesterday, but the England opener's fine century was overshadowed by his controversial dismissal.
Stewart scored 108 in 129 balls, with 14 fours, in this victory over the University of West Indies' Vice Chancellor's XI. He was fortunate to be granted two early lives, being dropped in the same fourth over at short mid-wicket and mid-off, but after that he played with great confidence.
However, the Surrey batsman was not happy when umpire Halley Moore ignored his pleas for a no ball to be given when he took a deliberate swipe at Franklyn Rose, after spotting only three rather than four fielders inside the 30-yard ring, and was bowled.
Stewart, who had repeatedly gestured to the umpires after being given out, walked off shaking his head in disgust. At a subsequent short break for rain, the England coach David Lloyd also took up the issue with the umpires. The management later said, however, that they accepted the decision.
Stewart shared a fourth-wicket stand of 157 with Adam Hollioake, England's one-day captain. Hollioake led England to the Champions' Trophy in Sharjah last December and leads the side in five one-day internationals against the West Indies starting tomorrow. He played an influential role with the bat here by hammering 76 off only 79 balls as England made 289 for seven off 49 overs.
When the Vice Chancellor's XI batted, the former West Indies openers, Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge, turned back the clock by flaying England's attack. They put on 108 in 21 overs to rekindle memories of their explosive strokeplay for so many years in the Test arena.
Once the Barbadian pair were out, however, the Vice Chancellor's side collapsed in the face of tight bowling and keen fielding. They were dismissed for 208 in 42 overs, the touring team winning by 69 runs after the local side's victory target was revised to 278 following rain.
As the Vice Chancellor's last six wickets fell for 67 runs, the West Indies captain Brian Lara was run out for nought without facing a ball.
Lara ran hard for an ambitious second and was beaten by a sharp throw from Graeme Hick which was palmed on to the stumps by Hollioake.
England backroom staff called the match a useful practice for the first one-day international against West Indies here tomorrow when Graham Thorpe, who has had a stiff back, will play instead of Angus Fraser.
