Rupert Murdoch's newspaper group, News International, has spent an estimated pounds 200,000 on the story of Kelly Fisher, the Californian model who on Thursday claimed to a TV audience that Mr Fayed had thrown her over for the Princess. A serialisation of her account begins today in the News of the World and continues all week in the Sun. But last night the story received a blow fromanother US model, Suzanne Gregard - Mr Fayed's ex-wife.
In an exclusive interview with the Independent on Sunday she questioned Ms Fisher's claims. She said she had met the "ex-fiancee" two weeks ago, when Ms Fisher had claimed to have called off her affair with Mr Fayed, but said she was keeping the ring because she "wasn't an idiot".
Ms Gregard's claims came as Max Clifford, the kiss-and-tell guru, was drafted in to advise the Harrods heir on the lawsuit brought by Ms Fisher's lawyer, Gloria Allred.
As the Princess of Wales flew off in a Harrods jet to Greece for her third Mediterranean cruise in a month, Prince Charles interrupted his break in Scotland for the second time to pose with his sons for photographers.
Royal aides denied suggestions that the photo-call was a bid to deflect attention from the media furore over Diana's romance with Mr Fayed.
