Tunnel traffic

CROSS-CHANNEL car traffic in the third quarter was 7 per cent higher than a year ago, when the Channel Tunnel had just reopened after the 1996 fire. Car traffic through the tunnel was up 33 per cent, freight lorry traffic 62 per cent and freight trains 8 per cent, Eurotunnel said yesterday.

However, the number of passengers travelling by Eurostar fell by 4 per cent to 1.76 million.
