A consortium including Racal, the electronics group, has been selected for a pounds 1bn contract to replace and manage the radio and communications system for London Underground. The consortium, which includes Racal Telecom, Welsh utility group Hyder, Charterhouse Bank and mobile phone group Motorola, was yesterday selected as the single bidder, beating a rival bid from a consortium headed by GPT, GEC's telecom equipment division. The news is a major boost for Racal Telecom, which is due to be demerged from its parent company next year.
