Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

THE PRICE of Horseshoe Cottage, a Grade II-listed cottage in the grounds of Arley Hall, near Knutsford, reflects the demand for character property in the South Manchester green-belt area and the stylish way this 18th-century smithy has been converted. pounds 269,950 buys a gothic arched stone fireplace, arched stone mullion windows, a beamed and vaulted kitchen, conservatory, gardens and garage. Call Reeds Rains on 01565 634126.

IT MAY be a concrete council block, but Trellick Tower, in west London, is Grade II-listed. PossibIy something to do with its architect, one Erno Goldfinger. One two-bedroom apartment is as desirable as any Docklands loft. The entrance hall and bathroom have rubber flooring, the 17ft reception room has a solid hardwood floor and sliding doors leading to a 21ft balcony. So successful was its interior design, it has appeared on BBC2's Home Front. It is for sale through Faron Sutaria for pounds 170,000 (0171-229 2404).

THE OLD Studio in Amberley, West Sussex, was the home of painter and wood engraver Ethelbert White. There are two sitting rooms; one has a gallery, wood-strip floor, exposed timbers and a wood-burning stove on a stone plinth. The other, with views over the gardens and brooks, has a railed balcony, vaulted ceiling, and tongue and groove wall-panelling. An outside iron staircase and balcony lead to a tower room. Almost hidden by a stone wall, the three-bedroom house stands behind double wooden gates. It is for sale for pounds 400,000. Call Guy Leonard & Co (01798 874033).
