Greggs has partnered with Just Eat to launch a nationwide delivery service. Fans of baked goods, including the vegan sausage roll, will be able to enjoy them delivered straight to their door after successful trials in London, Newcastle and Glasgow.

The service will be rolled out in Birmingham and Bristol this week, with launches planned for Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham in the spring and nationwide coverage expected by the end of the year.

Greggs and Just Eat said they will determine the next towns and cities to target with pastry deliveries based on customer demand.

Just Eat has asked its customers which areas should get the delivery service next, with 38,000 people having responded so far.

Greggs said the poll is open on the Just Eat website and those areas with the most votes will be prioritised.

The competition promises to be the latest in a series of viral marketing campaigns by Greggs that have generated significant buzz online.

Andrew Kenny, Just Eat’s UK managing director, commented: “We’re proud to be the only food delivery app that can bring you the likes of the Greggs vegan sausage roll wherever you are.”

Just Eat said Greggs’ products had proved extremely popular during the trial, with breakfast deliveries being a particular hit.

Top-selling delivery items include the sausage roll, steak bake and breakfast deal, which includes either a bacon, sausage or omelette roll/baguette with a hot drink, water or orange juice.

Greggs has been testing out deliveries since 2017, eventually choosing to partner with Just Eat over rivals Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Last week, the company announced staff would receive a bonus of £300 each, after a “phenomenal year”.

Greggs’ success was in part due to the popularity of the vegan sausage roll, which sparked a lively debate on social media. Piers Morgan labelled the bakery chain “PC-ravaged clowns”, perhaps helping ensure the product was a hit.

Just Eat, the market leader for food delivery in the UK, is in the process of being taken over by Dutch competitor Takeaway.com in a £5.9bn deal.

Just Eat shareholders approved the all-share deal on Friday, clearing the path to create one of the largest takeaway companies in the world.
