Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

THE INTERNET auctioneer QXL.com said yesterday that it had signed a deal with Excite to offer its services to the Web portal's 7.5 million users across Europe, writes Stephen Foley. QXL.com shares leapt to a record high on the news, rising by more than one-third to close at 670p, up 187.5p.

Under the agreement, Excite users in the UK, France, Germany and Italy will be able to access co-branded Excite-QXL.com auction sites, allowing them to bid for items ranging from computer hardware to holidays. Richard Foster, e-commerce manager at Excite, said: "The Internet market is exploding, with auctions emerging as one of the most successful and popular features across the Internet today."

The agreement will be extended into other European countries as QXL.com and Excite develop their sites on the Continent. Neither side disclosed how much QXL.com paid for the distribution deal. Last month QXL.com announced a similar tie-up with Internet service provider AOL.
