GERMANY will open two plants for recycling batteries this year. Based on technology developed by the chemical company Bayer, the plants will separate out and purify the metals in batteries. This will avoid pollution by heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and nickel when spent batteries are dumped in landfills.
