Higher mortgage tax relief opposed

Increasing mortgage tax relief for home buyers beyond its present pounds 30,000 ceiling would backfire on the housing market, forcing up house prices and creating heavy pressure for an interest rate rise, says a report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The report, by Steve Wilcox, an academic at the University of Wales, instead urges more targeted help, including mortgage benefits for buyers on low incomes.
