Early Inspirations and a Passion for Storytelling
Lei’s fascination with storytelling began in childhood. “I was captivated by how a single image or set could transport someone to another world,” he says. This passion for visual narratives led him to production design.
There, he found a platform to translate emotions into tangible spaces. “Creating environments that amplify dramatic tension and deepen character emotions excites me,” he confirms.
For Lei, production is more than aesthetics—it’s about carefully intertwining visuals with the essence of a film’s narrative.
Challenges and Triumphs in Period Design
Working on Jane Austen’s Period Drama presented significant challenges. A case in point involved designing a period-appropriate door that would prove central to some of the film’s comedic and dramatic moments. The door had to fit seamlessly within a historic building without damaging its stone arches. “We couldn’t attach or support the door with the building’s materials,” Lei explains.
The solution? A self-supporting arched structure, fully hidden from the camera. Lei details how the piece was lightweight yet sturdy enough to handle more dramatic scenes: “We succeeded without causing any damage, and audiences didn’t notice anything unusual about the door.”
This achievement highlights Lei’s ability to balance two necessities of any period piece set: historical authenticity and cinematic functionality.
A Fusion of Cultures in Design
Lei has an uncanny knack for bridging Eastern and Western aesthetics. As a result, his sets feel both modern and richly authentic. He has a deep knowledge of Chinese traditions that allows him to incorporate cultural symbols with precision—and respect.
“I apply principles like ‘varying density’ and ‘the interplay of void and solid’ to contemporary settings,” Lei shares. This approach enhances his designs and ensures cultural authenticity—especially in Asian-themed projects.
As a cultural bridge, Lei provides American film teams with valuable insights into Eastern aesthetics and traditions. “I help colleagues understand nuances that add depth and authenticity to storytelling,” he says. This multicultural perspective enriches American cinema and expands its narrative potential.

The film has also been an official selection at prestigious festivals, including the Tribeca Film Festival, the Palm Springs International ShortFest, and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
