Business and City Summary
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Israeli bankers go to jail
An Israeli court yesterday sent former top banking officials to jail for a 1983 share scandal that shook the country and cost the government dollars 9bn.
Jerusalem District Court Judge Miriam Naor imposed sentences of up to eight months on the former heads of Israel's top banks, found guilty in February of fraud in the country's biggest financial scandal. The bankers, eager to profit on a flood of money they saw depositors enjoying in the early 1980s, were accused of promoting their own banks' shares and propping the prices up artificially.
London attractions
London is currently the most attractive European city for hotel investment, according to a survey from Pannell Kerr Forster, Salomon Brothers and Jones Lang Wootton. Favourable exchange rates, low interest rates and property values all favour London, at the expense of recession-hit cities in Germany and Eastern Europe.
Park's process
Park Food Group, the UK's leading supplier of Christmas hampers, is investing pounds 4m in a new high-technology food process for which it is the sole UK licensee. Park will build a new plant for the process next to its head office in Birkenhead. The company said progress at Handling Solutions, the promotions management company it bought for pounds 9.3m in December 1993, was 'up to the board's best expectations'.
