Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

MINISTER HEADS FOR TAIWAN

The trade minister, Richard Needham, will try to save British Aerospace's proposed joint venture with Taiwan Aerospace Corporation when he visits Taipei next week. Department of Trade and Industry officials confirmed that he was likely to discuss the deal on the long- planned trade promotion visit.

BAe says that without the deal, which appears to be in danger of collapse, it will have to close its regional aircraft business, with the loss of 3,000 jobs.

DIRECTORS' PAY

Directors' total remuneration packages can amount to more than 200 per cent of their base salaries, according to a survey by the actuaries Bacon & Woodrow. The study, of 1,434 directors in 222 larger companies, showed the average basic salary of chief executives in July was pounds 158,000 and for directors as a whole was pounds 92,000. The typical director was aged 48 and male. Only 50 female executives were identified and only two groups had female chief executives.

GREYCOAT VALUE

The troubled property developer Greycoat has pounds 500m of assets, according to John Katz, who has campaigned for a number of shareholders over the lack of information provided by the company.
