Bunhill: A sweet sensation?

THE Germans are coming - for those with a sweet tooth, that is. After news of a revamped Mars bar, we hear that Britain's biggest-ever sugar confectionery launch is about to get under way.

Werther's Originals is a brand leader in Germany, and since its 1989 debut in the US it has become the best-selling hard candy. Six weeks of test marketing in the Borders has apparently gone down well, so Storck, the German owner, is ready to fork out pounds 3.5m to promote Werther's across the UK.

And the taste? According to my sweeth-toothed mole, Werther's Originals are just like good old-fashioned butterscotch, which may leave Callard & Bowser feeling a little sick.
