BRITISH LAND yesterday said it had taken out an option to buy Meadowhall shopping centre near Sheffield at a potential cost of pounds 1.17bn - the group's biggest deal.

Meadowhall, the UK's fourth largest shopping centre, will cost British Land pounds 700m, as it will take on liabilities of pounds 470m. The centre is owned by entrepreneurs Eddie Healey and Paul Sykes, an outspoken opponent of Britain joining the single European currency.
