Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

AS Wall Street booms, people who invested in the Thornton American Smaller Companies trust a year ago have lost 10 per cent of their money. Its performance over six months is slightly above average but over one month it is again at the bottom of the table, showing a loss of more than 5 per cent, writes Maria Scott.

David Harding of Thornton said the pounds 2.8m trust had specialised in unlisted small company stocks that were difficult to trade.

John Plumpton of Prolific Asset Management said his company's fund had done well from smaller company technology stocks - plus currency gains that amounted to about a fourth of last year's profits.

He said the last 15 months had produced a 'blistering' performance in the US market, in particular among smaller company stocks. But he was optimistic there would be further gains. 'Small companies have been in a bear market for about the last eight or nine years,' he said.
