WALL STREET fell as investors worried that the sliding yen would trigger a round of currency devaluations in Asia, with the Chinese yuan top of the list. The Dow closed at 8,574.85, down 23.17 points.

Blue chips tried to climb, but were eventually defeated by the currency worries and thin trading; declining issues outnumbered advances by two to one on the New York Exchange, and trading volume was modest at 576 million shares.
