US STOCKS rose as optimistic analyst reports on Intel and Compaq Computer sparked a rally in computer, semiconductor and software shares that sent the Nasdaq Index to a record.

The Dow Jones rose 27.81, or 0.3 per cent, to 8903.63, led by IBM. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 8.05 to 1188.03. The rally in computer shares pushed the Nasdaq up 41.78 to 2085.66. Investors showed little reaction to the debate on whether to impeach President Clinton or to the military attack on Iraq.
