THE DOW JONES Industrial Average was up nearly 100 points off Friday's close but faded in the final hour of trading to close down 4.12 points at 11,135.

Meanwhile, Prudential Securities' technical research director Ralph Acampora was reported to have lifted his year-end target for the Dow from 11,500 to a "conservative estimate" of 12,000 to 12,300, according to a source at the firm.

The hi-tech Nasdaq index closed down 4.56 points at 2,736.
