WALL STREET'S blue chips surged yesterday, led by technology and financial stocks, as encouraging earnings news helped to ease concerns about the outlook for corporate profits.

The Dow Jones average was up 153.74 points at 9,821.69 in the early afternoon as the market forced its way back towards the psychologically important 10,000 mark. The industrials were boosted by news from Caterpillar that the company saw signs of recovery in Asia.
