A STRONG afternoon rally ended a four-day losing run. In often brisk trading Footsie achieved an 86.3-points gain to 5,680, with New York, showing its relief over payroll figures, providing most of the encouragement. Mid cap shares made less impressive progress and small caps gave a little ground.
Compass, the contract caterer hit by a downgrading on Thursday, led the Footsie charge with a 50.5p recovery to 588.5p. Shire Pharmaceuticals, savaged after a fire threatened to disrupt operations, rallied 63p to 356.5p.
