BRITAIN'S FTSE 100 staged a late assault at its closing peak yesterday, helped by a surge in telecoms stocks and a flying start to Wall Street, but eventually missed the record books by a mere 18 points.
With the Dow and the Nasdaq heading higher, the FTSE powered ahead in late afternoon before slipping back in the dying minutes to close up 52.6 points or 0.8 per cent at 6,724.6. Its closing record is 6,742.2, notched up on 3 December. Market report, page 21
