BLUE CHIPS ended a quiet session down but off their lows. Footsie closed 8.7 points off at 6,375.2. But supporting shares were much more lively with the mid cap index climbing 7.3 to 6,054.3 and the small cap index stretching to yet another high with a 10.6 gain to 2,816. Marks & Spencer, the retailing group which has been under pressure, was one of the best performing blue chips. In heavy trading the shares rose 24.75p to 428p, helped by a series of meeting with analysts.
