LEADING SHARES closed 1 per cent higher, giving a positive end to a volatile week overshadowed by jitters over next week's expected US interest rate rise.
Led by gains in bank and drug stocks and responding to an early advance on Wall Street, the FTSE 100 closed up 62.8 points at 6,180.8.
On the week, the UK index lost 64.3 points, or 1 per cent, and it remains not far from the six-month lows reached earlier in the month.
