LONDON

STOCKS ENDED higher for the sixth successive session as gains for oil and telecoms overcame falls in pharmaceuticals and banks. The FTSE 100 closed 11.5 points up at 6,447.0, taking gains in the last six sessions to 3.1 per cent.

BP Amoco and Shell rode soaring crude prices, with BP up 1.2 per cent and Shell 3.8 per cent. BT rose 2 per cent on expectation of strong first- half results; this, with Colt Telecom's 12 per cent surge, meant telecoms added 13 FTSE points.
