At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. All lanes of traffic were closed for two hours as New York Fire Department (NYFD) officials dealt with the blaze.
At 7am, four vehicles - three cars and a pick-up truck - driving on Brooklyn-bound lanes collided and three caught on fire. The flames were clearly visible from the pedestrian overpass and the smoke was visible from Manhattan.
One of the surviving victims was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The others were treated at the scene.
“I waited around an hour and a half,” one driver told CBS New York. “It’s very bad news for everybody.”
The fire was a few feet from a spot where throngs of tourists enter the bridge's pedestrian and cycling path.
The Brooklyn Bridge is a National Historic Landmark and exceptionally popular among tourists.
