Brighton demo ends in violence
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Eighty people were arrested yesterday as hundreds of police in riot gear and using dogs clashed with anti-road protesters on Brighton seafront, writes Clare Garner.
Police foiled an attempt by the radical anti-roads pressure group Reclaim the Streets to hold a street party in the middle of the East Sussex seaside town, seizing sound equipment, a van full of scaffolding poles, and an uninflated bouncy castle.
In scenes reminiscent of the Sixties mods and rockers battles in the resort, holidaymakers ran for cover to avoid being caught in the crossfire of cans and bottles being hurled at the police. The Sea Front and West Street were blocked for part the afternoon.
The organisers of the Reclaim the Streets event had hoped thousands would descend on the town to enjoy a mini carnival but only 400 to 500 protesters attended. Their aim, they said, had been to move the beach onto the roads of the town.
