Bird lady warned
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A pensioner was warned yesterday that she will be jailed for three months if she feeds birds or animals in her garden. Barbara Simpson, 60, was given a suspended prison sentence when she appeared at Winchester Crown Court for the fourth time this year, after she broke an injunction and two previous promises.
Mrs Simpson, who has a 24ft square bird table at her home in Preston, Dorset, said: "The judge is obviously not an animal lover. By doing this he has taken away everything that I have got. I would rather have gone to prison if I could come out and still feed my birds. I will try and keep my bird table going." Weymouth and Portland Borough Council had been granted an injunction forbidding her from feeding the birds. It had sought the court order after neighbours complained she was spending up to pounds 100 a week feeding the birds at her home.
