Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Independent’s Health and Social Affairs Correspondent Siobhan Fenton has been named this year’s winner of the Rosemary Goodchild Award for her coverage of the Northern Irish abortion ban.
The award was made as part of the FPA sexual health charity awards and celebrates the outstanding work in the areas of sexual health education, rights and support for women of all ages.
The judges unanimously chose Siobhan as the winner for her article: “The UK’s abortion shame: Northern Ireland urged to stop prosecuting women under abortion ban”.
The judges said: “All of the judges were impressed by the way Siobhan approached her story, to give not just an overview of the politics of the abortion issue and why the UK Government has a human rights responsibility for all its citizens, but also to remind us of the real women affected by the restrictive abortion law in Northern Ireland. Being able to share some of their stories made it a very powerful article.”
