Accountant on police theft charge

ANTHONY Williams, a Scotland Yard accountant, was last night charged with stealing more than pounds 30,000 from the Metropolitan Police. Mr Williams, 54, of New Malden, Surrey, is to appear at Bow Street magistrates' court, in central London, today.

He is charged with taking pounds 20,788.37 between 20 and 21 December 1993 and pounds 10,898.13 between 15 and 17 March this year. Mr Williams, an assistant director of finance at Scotland Yard, was rearrested and taken to a central London police station last night by detectives investigating the disappearance of pounds 4m from Metropolitan Police funds.
