Alec Bristow's book The Sex Life of Plants was pretty daring when it was published in the Fifties, with chapter headings such as "Bondage & Sadism" and "Plant Pregnancy". He bought The Grange, a former rectory near Eye in Suffolk, 40 years ago. In its 3.25 acres are the extensive greenhouses where he once housed a collection of orchids, a vinery and a fruit and vegetable garden. Now the six-bedroom, four-reception room property is for sale - pounds 325,000 through Clarke & Simpson (01728 724200).
Number 2 Kits Lane in Wallington, near Baldock in Hertfordshire, is where George Orwell wrote The Road To Wigan Pier, Homage to Catalonia and Coming Up For Air. He planted the roses which still flank the cottage fence, married his first wife in the village church and had the reception in the former pub next door. Now the two-bedroom thatched cottage with detached studio is for sale through Bryan Bishop (01438 718877), at pounds 195,000.
Sea Cliff, near Dartmouth in Devon, has some of the best sea views on the coast. It was built by Eric Williams, the former prisoner of war whose book The Wooden Horse was turned into a classic wartime escape film. The stone-built, three-bedroom house in three acres of grounds - which include a swimming-pool, a summer-house and direct access to the beach - now needs refurbishing. Knight Frank (01392 423111) is asking pounds 400,000.
