The first serious competition to the London Stock Exchange received approval from the City's main regulator, the Securities and Investments Board, this week.

Tradepoint Financial Networks is a screen-based electronic share-trading market which anonymously matches buy and sell orders at the same price.

This differs from the London Stock Exchange, where market-makers quote firm prices at which they will buy and sell large numbers of shares.
