The fortuitous forties

It was no surprise that no one won the jackpot last week, with the winning numbers heavily concentrated in one sector and 43, 44 and 45 providing three consecutive winning numbers and 47 making four out of five. Two more numbers, 13 and 36, made rare appearances in the winning frame.

Including bonus balls, numbers 40 to 49 have come up 138 times, compared with 116 wins from 18 to 27 and 106 wins from number 31 through 39.

Number 21 now holds the longest losing sequence, with 26 consecutive absences from the winning frame, but 39 remains the biggest anomaly, with just three wins in 86 draws, the last six weeks ago.
