Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

You may recall the upset caused in the motor insurance market 15 years ago with the launch ofDirect Line's telephone-based motor insurance. Now it aims to take the high ground in cyberspacewith the launch this week of motor, home and car breakdown insurance online. Direct Line claimsits website will provide the most efficient "quote and buy" service in the market, aiming to offer theoption of purchasing cover within two minutes.
It says customers will pay the same via the Net as they would over the telephone. However, EagleStar Direct claims its Net customers may save as much as 15 per cent. AA Insurance and NorwichUnion Direct offer 10 per cent discounts.
Both the AA and Screentrade use a panel of insurers. Screentrade will offer up to five premiumsfrom different insurers and give you the option of retaining your details online for up to 30 days totry to vary the information to improve the price. The AA uses a panel of 20 insurance companies.
