Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

If you think it's too difficult to switch energy suppliers then a new app launched this week could help change your mind. Voltz is the UK's first energy smart-switching app which allows users to switch with just a few taps on their mobile.

It's aimed at the three-fifths of Britons who have never switched energy supplier and, crucially, it's free. It's only on IOS right now but should be available to android users next month.

How does it work? You have to register – which takes three minutes, I'm told – and enter your details to switch. After that, the app will alert you when it's time to switch again – or tell you if you're already on the best deal. The company behind the app is Simplify Digital – a broadband comparison site – which tells me it can give Voltz free to consumers because it hopes to make money from it through licensing deals.

It costs nothing to give it a try but it could make switching energy deals – and saving cash – easier than it's ever been before. And that can only be good news for hard-pressed consumers. You can get more details at voltzapp.com
