Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

WHAT SWIMS across the wall and keeps you warm in the evening? A radiator - if you get it from Radiating Style. The company makes thermostatically controlled electric radiators in shapes ranging from a Sun Face that glows down at you, to a pair of dolphins racing across the wall. The most dramatic is a 'sculpture' inspired by Stubbs's painting, Horse Attacked by a Lion.

The radiators, which are more than a metre wide and stick out about 15cm from the wall, are available in a range of colours or with a polished surface. The cheapest model costs about pounds 1,000, but Radiating Style can undertake commissions, such as the coat-of-arms radiator it is making for a hotel. Only electric radiators have so far been manufactured, but the company is working on water radiators. Radiating Style, 194 New Kings Road, London SW6 (071-736 0600).

THE ORIGINAL, much-loved and much-copied Anglepoise lamp is 60 this year, and Anglepoise Lighting is celebrating the occasion by relaunching its classic design.

Invented in 1933 and based on the mechanics of the human arm, the original version will be displayed next month at the European Light Show and in leading lighting stores from March. The electrical components have been updated to comply with modern safety regulations.

Available only in black as a limited edition, this special Anglepoise is expected to cost about pounds 115 (as opposed to about pounds 30 for a basic modern version).

IT IS GOOD to see that the recession has not completely stifled the creative commercial spirit. It may not look pretty, but the new PozziGrip material does function successfully. This soft, thin sheet of rubbery cloth has high frictional qualities and lots of uses: such as stopping rugs from sliding, keeping things in place on your desk and helping to take lids off jars. It has even been used to keep a hospital patient in place while he underwent traction.

Available in packs of 4 x 14cm squares at pounds 2.50 (plus 75p p & p) or a roll of 30cm x 36cm at pounds 9.95 (plus pounds 1 p & p) from: Pozzani, Phoenix House, 31 Dudley Street, Grimsby, South Humberside (0472 251505).
