NORTHERN Rock is expected to close its popular instant access postal account to new savers next week. Birmingham Midshires offers a gross 6.75 per cent on deposits of pounds 500 in its postal account. The most competitive rate on pounds 2,000 deposits - 6.8 per cent gross - comes from Britannia's Capital Trust postal account. Britannia offers 7.25 per cent gross on pounds 25,000 deposits.

Lambeth Building Society's Premium 90 Plus Two, a 90-day notice account, offers 7.85 per cent gross on pounds 30,000. Withdrawals before June 1994 incur a loss of 45 days' interest.
