LEGAL & General's cap and collar mortgage is available for 95 per cent purchases and 90 per cent remortgages for an arrangement fee of pounds 225. The variable rate of 7.89 per cent is discounted by one percentage point until the end of February next year.

Cheltenham & Gloucester is offering a 4 per cent rate, until next February, for first-time buyers. The maximum is pounds 70,000. It is a three-year offer, but borrowers will go on to the variable rate after the first year.

Stroud & Swindon is cutting its 7.99 per cent variable rate to 5.49 per cent for 12 months.
