Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Keep an eye on your post as you could be in line for a compensation payout. Claims forms are being sent this month to people who paid out for plastic card or identity protection offered by Card Protection Plan. It was normally sold through banks and credit card companies and CPP was fined £10.5m for mis-selling policies to 1.3 million people.

The first compensation payments are expected to be made from the end of next month and the total redress bill will be around £1.3bn.

How much compensation you will get will depend on how long you had the cover. Card protection cost about £30 a year, while identity protection cost about £80 a year. The compensation covers insurance sold since January 2005 so the total amount repaid could be up to hundreds of pounds, although the average is likely to be £100.

Claims forms are sent in February but must be returned by the end of August. If you think that you're a victim and have not been contacted by the end of February, call a dedicated customer helpline on 0800 083 4393.
