Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.NO major auctions this Easter week, but Phillips' bi-annual sporting sale, Thursday (1pm) has an abundance of early issues of an ideal collectable - Wisden's Cricketers' Almanac. There is a limited number of them, new ones are cheap and old ones are rising steadily in value.
A complete set of 130 of the annuals is worth about pounds 20,000. A first edition of 1864, from a private collection, is estimated pounds 2,000- pounds 3,000 in the sale. A rare 1875 issue is pounds 1,000- pounds 1,500. For some reason - a good topic for research - there was a very small print run that year. The collection lacks 1869, another scarce edition. Perfect copies fetch pounds 1,000- pounds 1,200.
A letter from Wisden of 1886 says 'those for 69 and 75 cannot be obtained anywhere and we would gladly buy them' (lot 106, pounds 100- pounds 150). Even in 1886, apparently, Wisden was a collectable. Run-of-the-mill Victorian editions are estimated pounds 200- pounds 300.
Best of the rest: at Christie's South Kensington, Wednesday, decorative objects, carpets and ceramics (10.30am), silver and plate (2pm), British and Continental watercolours and drawings, (also 2pm), Thursday, British and Continental glass and ceramics, including a private collection (10.30am). Sotheby's has a colonnade sale of furniture, Friday (10.30am) and a gun sale featuring the Prince Regent's 20-bore double-barrelled flintlock, pounds 7,000- pounds 10,000.
Sponsored by Christie's South Kensington to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Coronation, 4,000 lead soldiers recreating the Coronation procession are at the Guards Museum, Birdcage Walk, London SW1, until 22 December, Monday-Thursday and weekends (10am-4pm).
