From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A man who has worked for Honda's Swindon factory for 24 years has called out Brexit leaders in a brief, scathing statement after he found out his branch will close and 3,500 jobs may be lost.
Speaking to Channel 4 News about Brexit, he said:
What are we, like, 44 days away from Brexit? And they haven’t got a clue! They can’t even decide for themselves what Brexit means.
This is idiocy of epic proportions.
The clip spread like wild fire online, as people sympathises with his potentially precarious job situation.
People are in solidarity with the man.
Others called his sumation of Brexit "perfect".
Honda confirmed that it will close its factory in Swindon, with production to shut down in 2021. The Japanese manufactuer’s UK plant employs 3,500 staff and makes 150,000 Honda Civics a year.
Honda said the decision was part of its plan to accelerate commitment to electrified cars. The company’s UK boss told BBC Radio 4’s Today Program it was not a decision related to Brexit.
“In light of the unprecedented changes that are affecting our industry, it is vital that we accelerate our electrification strategy and restructure our global operations accordingly.
As a result, we have had to take this difficult decision to consult our workforce on how we might prepare our manufacturing network for the future. This has not been taken lightly and we deeply regret how unsettling today’s announcement will be for our people.
The significant challenges of electrification will see Honda revise its global manufacturing operations, and focus activity in regions where it expects to have high production volumes.
This comes after Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to either cut UK jobs or shift production to other countries.
