Earth Day 2023: Sustainably focused shopping swaps, from vegan razors to recycled jewellery

These planet-friendly purchases also cover weekly groceries and cutting-edge footwear innovation

Friday 14 April 2023 15:44 BST
(Earth Day Multi-Brand)

Earth Day falls on 22 April every year, and this environmental event shines a spotlight on the climate crisis. Today, there is a bigger focus on environmental issues than ever before. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report in March highlighting that global emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases continue to increase. It also established that climate change is caused by human activity, but there are changes we can make in our everyday lives that can help us lead more eco-conscious lifestyles.

For Earth Day 2023, we are being asked to “Invest In Our Planet” and key ongoing focuses include ending plastic pollution, planting trees, committing to sustainable fashion choices, and cleaning up our communities. There’s an online toolkit available for download on the Earth Day website, and you can also look out for local events.

So, what else can we do? Making sustainably focused shopping choices is one simple place to start. We’ve rounded up a few key products, from weekly groceries to jewellery and footwear purchases with an eco-friendly ethos. Keep reading for the Earth Day swaps you’ll want to shop straight away.

Allbirds M0.0NSHOT: Allbirds.co.uk

(Allbirds)

This is an exciting Earth Day early peek at Allbirds’s brand-new M0.0NSHOT shoes, with more info set to land in June, ahead of their launch from spring next year. Billed as being the world’s first net zero carbon shoe, its carbon footprint of 0.0 kg CO2e – versus an industry average of 14 kg CO2e – was created without using any offsetting.

Key zero carbon design features include a carbon-negative regenerative merino wool upper grown in New Zealand, and a carbon-negative sugarcane-based foam midsole while most footwear foams are synthetic. Meanwhile, there are carbon-negative bioplastic eyelets using microorganisms to convert methane into a type of carbon footprint-free polymer that can be moulded like other plastics.

The M0.0NSHOT shoes will also be presented in the most carbon-efficient packaging Allbirds has ever had and be delivered using a carbon-conscious transportation plan. In short, where some parts of the shoe’s design do emit carbon, others capture it, which means the final product total is net zero.

While we eagerly anticipate further M0.0NSHOT details, you can shop Allbirds Tree Runners for men (£110, Allbirds.co.uk) and women (£110, Allbirds.co.uk), which are eco-friendly shoe classics suitable for everyday wear.
