From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Amal Clooney has teamed up with the Prince of Wales to celebrate young inspirational women.

Over the weekend, the prince’s charity, the Prince’s Trust International, announced it had launched a new global award with the human rights lawyer to shine a light on women who have made a significant impact on their communities.

The Amal Cooney Award will “highlight the work of young women who have succeeded against the odds to make a lasting difference in their communities”, according to the Trust’s website.

Speaking of her invitation to support the new award, Clooney says: “I am honoured to have been invited by Prince’s Trust International to participate in this global initiative celebrating young women who are change-makers in their communities.

“It is a privilege to be able to play a part in a project that will draw attention to incredible young women who are the future leaders of our world.”

Clooney will select one young winner, aged between 11 and 30, to be presented with the award next year.

Applications will be accepted from women working in “anything from sustainable farming schemes to community projects in refugee camps, to work rebuilding war zones”.

Group chief executive of The Prince’s Trust, Dame Martina Milburn DCVO CBE, adds: “Through the work of the Prince’s Trust Group around the world, we see every day the struggles and the triumphs of women everywhere.

“We are delighted to be working with Amal to shine a light on their passion and celebrate unsung female heroes everywhere. There is so much we can achieve together to help young people, and their communities, all over the world.”

The announcement comes days after Clooney, who was recently appointed to the UK’s Attorney General’s expert panel on public international law, joined Prince Charles for a dinner celebrating The Prince’s Trust at Buckingham Palace with her husband, actor George Clooney.
