Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The powerful portrayal of pianist David Helfgott in Shine (cert 15) has not only filled audiences with admiration for the artist himself, but also reminded them of the beauty and passion which can be inspired by classical music. Here's a chance to develop your own musical talents and win your very own Yamaha piano as well as a copy of Shine on video before it's available to buy in the shops.

Shine will be available to rent on video from 9 September. To mark this release, The Eye has teamed up with Miramax Home Entertainment and Yamaha Music, the world-leading piano manufacturer, to offer classical music lovers a great package of prizes.

We have a first prize of a beautiful acoustic piano worth pounds 2,999. The Yamaha C108 upright piano (right) features elegant detailing and fine craftmanship, with a mahogany satin-finish. Made in the UK, this piano features a solid spruce sound-board for high tonal quality and Yamaha's unique patented action for greater expression and control. David Helfgott plays a Yamaha concert grand piano at home.

Our overall winner, as well as winning the piano, will also receive the last pair of available tickets for the David Helfgott performance at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 October, where he will play the Rach 3 for the first time since his breakdown. A copy of Shine on video and the movie CDsoundtrack complete the first prize package. Ten runners-up will each receive Shine on video and a copy of the CD soundtrack.

To enter the prize draw, answer this question: Which actor played David Helfgott in the movie Shine?

Send your entries on a postcard, including your name address and daytime contact telephone number to: Eye/Shine Offer, PO Box 348, PR Newslink, 9-10 Great Sutton Street, London EC1V 0DA.

Entries to be received by 12 September 1997. Competition open to UK residents only. Usual Newspaper Publishing rules apply.

The first prize will go to the first correct entry picked from the postbag on 12 September. The next 10 picked out will each win a video and a CD.
