Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The winners of the Electrolux Design Lab competition will be decided by judges on September 23 but members of the public are also being given a chance to vote for their favorite project.

The Electrolux Design Lab competition was open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students from around the world. The brief centered on predictions that by 2050 74 percent of the world's population would live in urban spaces, entrants were therefore asked to design a household product of the future which would reduce domestic energy consumption and provide a solution to living in increasingly small spaces.

On September 10 the most popular design as voted by the public was the Bio Robot Fridge by Yuriy Dmitriev from Russia. The fridge stores food in a biopolymer gel and cools its contents through luminescence. In close second place was the wall-mounted clothes washer the Dismount Washer which was designed by Lichen Guo from China.

Voting is open to members of the public up until September 22. At http://www.electroluxdesignlab.com/2010/08/vote-for-your-favourite-electrolux-design-lab-2010-concept/

Winners of the annual Incheon International Design Awards held in Korea will be announced later in September; entrants were tasked with designing an environmentally friendly product which would enhance the way people live.
