From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Calling all vegans!

VegfestUK Brighton returns for its 11th edition this year.

This year, the two-day event (23-24 March) hosts talks and panel discussions, covering everything from plant-based health and nutrition to presentations on farming and growing, as well as wellness and yoga sessions.

The festival’s new features come in response to the growing interest in veganism in Britain.

According to the latest research by the Vegan Society, there are estimated to be around 540,000 vegans over the age of 15 living in the UK.

This year, more than 250,000 people in 193 countries signed up to Veganuary – a month dedicated to living without animal products – reports Inhabitat.

Here is everything you need to know about VegfestUK Brighton 2019.

What happens at the festival?

The event is a celebration of all things vegan and features around 230 stalls selling vegan products, around 18 globally inspired vegan street food caterers and 12 featured areas and 80 special guests.

There will be cookery demonstrations, showcasing the best ways of getting the most out of everyday vegan ingredients in the kitchen, as well as an Art of Compassion Exhibition, displaying art posters and exhibits dedicated to veganism, and animal rights.

Products available to buy at the event include vegan meats, cheeses, cakes, kombuchas, and smoothies, as well as clothing, footwear, bags and cosmetics.

What should you expect?

New areas at the festival this year include workshops focusing on how we to build a community that does’t discriminate against animals, created and led by new grassroots activist group Animal Think Tank.

There will also be talks hosted by non-profit organisation Plant Based Health Professionals UK about health and nutrition, and discussions around permaculture, farming and growing.

Visitors will also be able to relax in a dedicated yoga and wellness zone run by vegan community group, Yogific, and attend fitness panel discussions on how plant-based diets help with recovery and optimal fitness.

There will also be talks on radical veganism hosted by animal rights educator Christopher Sebastian.
