Students can be fickle when it comes to love life and discos. But at the top at this moment are:
Aberdeen: The Lemon Tree, which mixes live rock with folk and provides a cafe-bar and "intimate spaces"; the Paramount bar; Franklands nightclub; and Mudd Club, which serves up lashings of hard rock. There is also the Exhibition Centre, which does not sound like a hot venue but which has, in fact, become the northern-most spot for the big-name groups touring the UK, such as Oasis, Radiohead, Teenage Fanclub and DJ Shadow. Be prepared to queue.
Dundee: Lucifer's Mill, best for indie and the charts, and Caird Hall which mixes a fine cocktail of classical and pop. And for something more unusual, try West Port, which provides those wonderful cajun sounds from deepest Mexico.
Edinburgh: Dr Connery's, a nightclub which forms part of the Heriot-Watt University union and has good rave-ups thrice weekly; in the city, there is The Venue for hardcore, Shaft and FBI for retro and indie.
St Andrews: There is no nightclub in the town (apparently everyone is too worn out after the golf) but the university provides one for students. The locals may, and do, join in the fun. There is a disco on Fridays and a rotation of House music and Seventies and Eighties retro on Saturdays. Hottest jazz in town is to be heard at the Younger Hall and Victoria Cafe, which also hosts blues and folk.
