For the uninitiated, The Hills was a cult series that aired from 2006 to 2010, and was credited for kickstarting the careers of Spencer and Heidi Pratt, Lauren Conrad and Olivia Palermo, who starred in a spin-off version of the programme, The City, with Hills alumnae Whitney Port.
But ahead of the Los Angeles-based programme’s highly-anticipated reboot, which premieres on MTV on 25 June, one of the show’s most memorable stars, Justin “Bobby” Brescia, has spoken out about the downsides of reality TV fame.
Speaking to Press Association, Brescia – who famously had an on-off relationship with co-star Audrina Patridge – warned that “you have to have a really tough skin” in the industry.
“You have to take things as they come and try to have a good group around you to chat with because the media and the way they portray things can tear you apart as a human.”
Brescia continued by offering some advice to aspiring TV stars: “Stay home to yourself and pray if you need to. Get into yourself and understand what you really want.
“Not that it gets you too mad because this isn’t everything, just part of something.”
For the series' return, which has been titled The Hills: New Beginnings, Brescia will be joined by fellow original cast members, including the Pratts, Brody Jenner and his ex-girlfriend, Patridge, who finalised her divorce from estranged husband Corey Bohan in December last year.
New faces to join the lineup include Brandon Thomas Lee, son of Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson, and actor Mischa Barton.
Speaking about how the new series would differ from the original, Brescia suggested things would be more realistic this time around.
“It’s pretty raw now,” he said. “You can’t really get away with stuff and editing isn’t going to save your a**. What you see is what you’re going to get.”
