Shawn Mendes has reacted to a 2015 clip of him denying that he and now-girlfriend Camila Cabello were dating, revealing that it was “really hard” to watch and that he had been in denial about his feelings.

The 22-year-old singer was reminded about the video during an appearance on Monday's episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden, where Corden recalled that he’d never seen a “more unconvincing denial” than when Mendes and Cabello appeared on the show together.

In the clip, which Corden then played for Mendes and guest Matthew McConaughey, the Señorita singers are sitting closely on the host’s couch as he asks: “Are you two dating?”

After Mendes turned towards Cabello for her reaction, she responded: “Well… no. No, we’re not.”

Mendes then interjected, adding: “At the end of the day we’re not dating, we’re just friends.”

In response to Corden’s inquiry about how it feels watching the clip now, Mendes said: “It's hard, it's really hard. I had to take some real deep breaths and hear Matthew McConaughey in the back of my head saying: 'You're gonna be OK.'"

The Wonder singer then revealed that the clip was filmed at a time when he hadn’t admitted to himself that he was in love with Cabello, who he has been dating since July 2019.

“I didn’t even accept that I was completely in love with her for another three years after that point, but it’s so obvious on my face right there,” Mendes said, adding: “I think three years after that was when I finally admitted it and then another two years after that was when I decided to do something about it.”

However, according to Mendes, the timing “kind of worked out”.

“Look at me now, we’re good. Everything’s amazing,” he continued while smiling, prompting Corden to respond: “Awww.”

Mendes previously opened up about the feelings he’s had for Cabello in his Netflix documentary Shawn Mendes: In Wonder, in which he revealed that all of the songs he’s written have been about the 23-year-old.

“My song comes on the radio or something and I'm like: 'Everything's about you. They're all, they have always been about you,'" he said. "She goes: 'What do you mean?' Like: 'They're all about you. Like every song I've ever wrote.'"

The pair first met in 2014 before collaborating in 2015 on their song I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Mendes confirmed he and Cabello were dating while performing a concert in Australia in October 2019.
