At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference.Sam Smith has opened up about the insecurities they experience at Christmas, revealing that this time of year “always triggers tricky body issues”.
On Tuesday, the singer posted a black and white photograph of their bare chest alongside a caption in which they urged fans to be kind to themselves.
“Christmas time is upon us,” the caption begins. “This time of the year always triggers tricky body issues with me.
“I love me some mince pies and all the trimmings, and I always find I gain a bit of weight during this time.”
Smith went on to explain that they wrote this caption for themselves as well as for their followers.
“I’m writing this out to you all, but also writing this for myself,” they wrote.
“Let’s make sure we remind our bodies during this time that no matter what weight we are, we are deserving of love and acceptance.
“Let’s love our fluctuating bodies. Look in that mirror and shower that reflection with Christmas kindness.”
Smith concluded the post by encouraging fans to “be super soft” before admitting that self-acceptance is “an everyday struggle” for them.
“You aren’t alone,” they added.
Smith’s post has already garnered more than 585,000 likes and thousands of comments from fans and celebrities, including actor Sam Claflin and plus-size model Tess Holliday.
It’s not the first time Smith has opened up about their body image struggles. Earlier this year, in an interview with Jameela Jamil, they admitted to getting liposuction at the age of 12.
“I was so self conscious that it was affecting my mood and life everyday,” they said before explaining that the surgery “didn’t really change anything”.
Smith also explained that they are keen to combat the stigma that surrounds talking about body image.
“It doesn’t feel manly does it to talk about how I feel in my body every day,” they said, “but that’s what I’m trying to fight against I guess.”
